I. Overview

University of Cambridge; Cantab), is a world-renowned public research university with a federal college system, located in Cambridge, England, along with Oxford University, known as Oxbridge, the second oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Cambridge is located in Cambridgeshire, 50 miles north of London. Cambridgeshire itself is an English town with about 100,000 inhabitants. The town is crossed by a river called the River Cam. The River of Sword is a small river that runs north-south and zigzagging, and there are many bridges over the river, the most famous of which are the Bridge of Mathematics, the Bridge of Grey and the Bridge of Sighs, from which Cambridge takes its name.

The University of Cambridge itself does not have a designated campus, no walls, and no school badge. The vast majority of colleges, institutes, libraries and laboratories were built on the banks of the River of Swords in the town of Cambridge, as well as at various locations within the town. Cambridge is well connected by road and rail, and within easy reach of London's main airports.

3. Admission requirements

The University of Cambridge is in fact just a loosely organized consortium of colleges, with a high degree of autonomy but all adhering to a unified Cambridge charter, which is drafted by the university's legislature and amended annually. The University of Cambridge is only responsible for examinations and degree awarding, while the specific criteria for admitting students are determined by each college and admissions are made by itself.

Universities and colleges, although complementary, are different entities and economically independent. Universities are publicly owned and funded by the state, while colleges are privately owned, self-fending and self-financing. The university is responsible for graduate students, while the college is responsible for the enrollment of undergraduate students, and the number is planned by the university.
